Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Add the sliced onions with a pinch of salt, cooking for about 10 minutes until soft and golden. Drizzle in balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, then remove and set aside.
  2. Add another tablespoon of butter in the same skillet. Place two slices of sourdough bread, layer half of the cheddar cheese, distribute the caramelized onions, sliced apple, and pear, top with remaining cheddar, and cover with other slices.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high, grill one sandwich for 4-5 minutes until golden brown, flip and grill the other side for another 4-5 minutes until cheese is melty.
  4. Remove from skillet and let cool for a minute. Slice and serve warm, optionally with a side salad or bowl of soup.
