Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C), prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and dusting them.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually alternate adding the dry mix with milk, stirring until smooth.
  6. Divide batter between pans, smooth tops, and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. While cooling, warm milk in a saucepan. In another bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks.
  8. Slowly whisk warm milk into egg mixture to temper, then return to heat and stir until thickened.
  9. Slice each cake layer in half horizontally to create four layers.
  10. Begin assembling by layering custard and diced strawberries between the cake layers.
  11. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours.
  12. Serve sliced with whipped cream if desired.
