Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F) and position the oven rack in the middle.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  3. Sift together the self-raising flour, baking powder, salt, cayenne pepper, and mustard powder.
  4. Add cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Whisk together the milk and egg, then pour into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Lightly flour your work surface and gently knead the dough until it comes together.
  7. Cut the dough into 8 equally sized scones and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the tops of the scones with a little milk and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden.
